A spectacular sunrise over Hood Canal and Puget Sound as viewed from Marmot Pass on Washington's Olympic Peninsula. In addition to the brilliant color, a solar pillar radiates upward from the rising sun. This atmospheric optical phenomenon is caused by the reflection of sunlight off horizontally-oriented ice crystals in the air.
