Redwood National and State Parks, California (2013)

Northern California is home to the tallest living trees on Earth, the coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens), reaching heights of 379 feet.  To achieve such heights, coast redwoods require an abundant amount of moisture.  However, the towering height of the trees makes water transport from the root system to the canopy a laborious task.   Occupying a narrow region of land along the California coastline where, in addition to heavy rainfall, the cool ocean causes water molecules in the air to condense, forming a thick fog.  This fog supplies moisture to the canopy,  relieving the water stressed canopy and thus supporting the growth of these giants.
