Palouse region, Washington (2020)
At sunrise, the mesmerizing rolling hills of wheat covering Washington’s Palouse region are bathed in warm, glowing light. The rising sun's rays illuminate the landscape, casting long shadows, accentuating the texture of the hills.
The Palouse region is characterized by a series of rolling hills and valleys that were formed over thousands of years by wind-blown sediment. The hills are composed of layers of volcanic ash and loess, a wind-blown silt that was deposited during the last Ice Age.
Over time, the soft, crumbly nature of the loess has made it susceptible to erosion, resulting in the distinctive rolling hills and valleys that are so characteristic of the Palouse landscape. The hills are often covered in a patchwork of wheat and other crops, which adds to the beauty and charm of the region.
