Brown bear - Katmai National Park, Alaska (2018)
Katmai National Park is home to the largest protected brown bear population on earth with well over 2,000 estimated to live in this remote area of the Alaska Peninsula. In July, the Brooks River swells with Sockeye salmon making their way to spawning grounds in Brooks Lake. However, a 6 foot waterfall spanning the river creates a bottle neck, drawing numerous bears to the location to feast on the bounty of salmon present. The largest and most dominant bears get the prime fishing spots at the top and bottom of the falls and each spot requires a different fishing technique. This bear, positioned beneath the falls, looks on as another bear works a fishing hole at the base of the falls.
